14.05 (-14.25) Round the Countryside: 5: Bird Protection: 2: Eggs
Eric Parker
Because birds' eggs are in themselves lovely things, and there is a thrill in finding them, and their variety of colouring makes them something to be coveted like a Newfoundland postage stamp; above all, because they are forbidden, they are, and must always be, a temptation to a boy or girl.
But one has only to point out that birds' nesting is cruel; that if they take an egg they are depriving a mother of her child and taking a life, to win the best boys and girls over to the side of the birds.
They have enough enemies - cats, weasels, marauders of their own species like cuckoos and crows; they have storms to contend with; they have their own misguided instinct in building nests in places like old ventilators and chimneys, and even a goods truck which, lying in a siding in the south, may carry the nest and eggs to the north of England.
But, above all, what will appeal most to the boy and girl is the bravery of the mother bird who will sit close on her eggs, indifferent to approaching danger. If there is one thing lovelier than the hedge-sparrow's sky-blue eggs in their cup of moss and feathers, it is the courage of the little mother bird, so alert but steadfast, as she sits on her nest almost begging you with her bright eyes to leave her alone.

FRANK SALE (baritone)
A BARBER in the period of this opera was a much more important person than he is now, and for all sorts of happenings in the city he was a kind of agent or impresario. People met at the barber's ; if there was anything to be done the barber was the man to see that it got done; he dispensed advice, a little law, a little physic, a little bit of everything useful ; a most important man, and Figaro, who in this song calls himself ' the city's factotum ', is not claiming more than he is entitled to claim.
THE DANCE OF THE TUMBLERS is taken from the opera The Snozvmaiden. Festival is at its height in the realm of the Snowmaidens. It is the first day of Spring, and bridal pairs have assembled to receive the King's blessing. Tumblers are engaged to amuse them.
