This amusing and cynical extravaganza was first produced on January 16, 1931, and revived on April 8, 1932. It concerns the art of losing wars and the reason for losing them. The Republic of Thalia declares war on the Kingdom of Sardonia (both in the Balkans) and in order to lose it, gives the command of its army to the most incompetent ' dug-out ' it can find. ' If Ferranzi can only keep a battle going long enough he is practically bound to lose it,' says the President of Thalia. Ferranzi is opposed, however, by an even worse general than himself, the King of Sardonia in person. What happened when an ardent young patriot took charge of affairs is told brilliantly in this humorous play with its vivid war scenes and caustic wit.
