Tone Poem, Paphnutius.... Harold Lake
1. Lento; 2. Andante con moto; 3. Lento.
(Conducted by The Composer)
This work is based on the character ' Paphnutius', created by M. Anatole France , in his book 'Thais.' Paphnutius is a hermit, who sets out from the desert, where ho lives, to Alexandria, in order to save the soul of the actress Thais. Ho is successful in converting Thais, who enters a convent, but the cost to himself is the loss of his own soul, for after a time of great mental distress, passion overrules asceticism, and he seeks out Thais, who, surrounded by holy women of the convent, dies as he reaches her.
The music is not meant in any way to describe the 'action' of the book, but an attempt has been made to portray the states of mind through which Paphnutius passes, as his austerity of character and pureness of purpose become tainted by his obsession for Thais, whom he is endeavouring to save. At the end Paphnutius is shown as a vampire - 'he had become so repulsive that, passing his hand over his face, he felt his own hideousness'.
