ALEXANDER GLAZOUNOV differs from his Hussian contemporaries in many ways, although his career has been passed in active unity with the ' new Russian School ' founded by Balakirev, Borodin. Mussorgsky, and Rimsky-Korsakov. He is, for example, a symphonic composer, and has never been attracted to opera nor very much to songs. He lias, it is true, written ballets for the stage, but their main characteristics are of the instrumental type. He shows a preference, too, for classical forms, and is the one disciple of Brahms that the Russian School can boast. His work is chiefly remarkable for its harmonic brilliance and picturesque orchestration. Even Rimsky-Korsakov is not his superior in matters of orchestral colour. All Glazounov's later symphonies have been performed in this country, and of them, the sixth is the most popular, though the fourth runs it very close. It was first produced in England at a Royal Phil. harmonic concert in 1897 and has already been broadcast on several occasions. There are only three movements in place of the usual four, and no slow movement at all.

TAN PIETERSZOON SWEELINCK has been called the musical father of North Germany. A pupil of Uabrieli, he was influenced in his organ playing, as were organists all over Europe, by Frescobaldi, on whose principles and treatment of the organ, however, he impioved. He can, too, be shown to be the direct musical ancestor of Johann Sebastian Bach , in that his immediate successors, who were naturally influenced by Sweelinck, were the sources from which Bach drew his inspired treatment of the Choral.
Francois Roberday , a famous organist in Paris, was at one time court musician to QueenAnne of Austria and Queen Marie Thérèse. Lully was one of bis pupils.
Pierre du Mage was organist at the Collegiale de Saint-Quentin, 1703 to 1713, and in 1733 took part in the installation of the great organ at Notre Dame, Paris.

LOUIS GOODRICH 'S episodic serial play continues with the pleasures and pains of a very nice modern young couple at a christening, Lord's and a nursing home. The young things are superhumanly, bright through all their ' breaks,' and their crisp dialogue leaves no time or attention for the cricket news while listening. Frederick Lloyd , who scored in last week's revival of ' To See Ourselves,' Ann Trevor , and Geoffrey Wincott are the chief names in an experienced radio cast.
