PIONEER HILL-BILLY SINGERS
JOHN MITCHELL and BILL MITCHELL and PEARL PICKENS
HILL-BILLY songs aro the folk-tunes of the American backwoods. Many of them will be familiar to listeners, for they originated in this country. The first settlers from England carried their folk-songs. with them when they trekked across America in their old cattle-wagons, and the tunes have been handed down from father to son.
Carson Robison has re-discovered theoo songs and created an enormous vogue for them in America, and in the short time the singers have been over hero they have bocome very popular in London.
Carson Hobison himself says that the two essentials of a Hill-Billy song are a moral and a good, catchy tune.

(the fourth)
THE 'Miscellany ' series, suspected by some of satirical intent, offers a dis armingly catholic selection of plays, poenis. and music in ita fourth programme. Musically, Hindemith's There and Back, a sketch with music broadcast for the first. time, in which words and music angrilv reversed by Time flow backward, heads the bill. Ibert, another modern, is re presented by three movements from In ' Donogo ' suite, and Anne Thursfield sings three poems from James Joyce 's ' Chamber Music ' to the settings of Eugene Goossens. Richard Hughes in a brilliant short poem gives bitter reasons why gentlemen do not prefer dons. The plays include a first radio essay by Judith Saltern , The Orient Express-a girl, a man and an accident—and Granville Barker 'n
English version of one of the delicious Anatol dialogues of Arthur Schnitzler , A Farewell Supper, lovers parting with a first-class row in a smart Viennese restaurant of the nineties. A programme bright with promise of intelligent entertainment.
