TCHAIKOVSKY from a child had the greatest affection for the compositions of tho
Italian school and particularly for those of Mozart. It is perhaps the influence that this affection had on his own work which gave Tchaikovsky's music so popular an appeal at a time when Wagner and Brahms were the models most in vogue. But Tchaikovsky never swerved in his allegiance, and this suite is in some measure an act of homage. He has here taken some little known compositions of Mozart and worked them into an orchestral suite, using a Mozart orchestra and as far as possible a Mozart idiom. The first two numbers are taken from piano pieces, the third is the well-known Ave Verum in Liszt's transcription, and the theme of the variations is a tune Unser dummer I'Obel meint, which is not even Mozart's, but one which Mozart used for a set of piano variations.

CEDRIC BELFRAGE , most ' air-minded ' of our journalists-he recently flew 6,000 miles to and fro between New York and Hollywood — has just returned from a flight to Galway. He visited Robert Flaherty , director of Nanook, Moana, Tabu, and other masterpieces of film ' actuality,' who is now engaged in making a picture with the Aran Islanders as its subject. This most original British picture has been commissioned by the directorate of Gaumont British with a commendable disregard cf so-called ' commercial wisdom,' and should prove magnificent. Flaherty has a subject after his own licart-the stern struggle for existence on the three tiny rock isles off the coast of Galway, the isles where J. M. Synge lived and about which he wrote great plays. In Spring the islanders carry enough earth to the rocky summit to be able to grow their corn ; then come autumn and the equinoctial gales which snatch the soil away again. The director of Man of Aran (as the film is temporarily entitled) is taking time over his picture. He has taken many weeks to settle into his background among the islanders. Such, too, was his method with the Esquimaux of Nanook and the South Sea natives of Tabu.

THIS is the second of three quartets dedicated
-I- to Prince Rasoumowsky, whose connection with Beethoven was probably that of patron. Rasoumowsky was the son of a Russian peasant ennobled by the Empress, and he had a distinguished career as an admiral in the Russian navy and ambassador to several European courts. He married one of the ' Three Graces,' the celebrated daughters of the beautiful Countess of Thun, and was thus brother-in-law to Prince Lichnowsky, also a patron of Beethoven, who married another daughter, and to Lord Guildford, who married the third. All three girls were exceptionally musical. Rasoumowsky kept a quartet of string players (of which he was himself second violin) as part of his establishment.
