On hearing the first
Cuckoo in Spring Delius
THIS is one of the loveliest conceptions of Spring in all music, and, at the same time, one of the most beautiful of Delius' shorter pieces, the other being Stimmer Night on the River. It dates from 1912, and was first performed at a Philharmonic concert in January. 1014, under Mengelborg. It is only within the last few years that the work of Dolius has become reasonably well known in this country, and that it is so at all is due very largely to the unceasing devotion of Sir Thomas Beecham , for twenty years the unflagging champion of one whom he considers at least as great a composer as any among his contemporaries. So that it is not so true now as it was when Sydney Grew , the music critic, wrote it : 'In Germany, Delius is accepted as a master. Here in England opinion is divided, those who do not know his works dispuiing the judgments of those who do.'
That a man who has so often set Nature to music with such loving perfection should live in surroundings that consort with his musical vision is natural. Dolius does, in fact, live in such a place. The little village of Grez-sur-Loing, not far from Paris, was a favourite haunt of Robert Louis Stevenson , who has described it charmingly in his ' Essays of Travel.' Since his day it has changed hardly at all.
