A N Almayne, or Allemande, is a dance in slow measure, now obsolete. In fact, it was already antiquated in the sixteenth century, for Thoinot Arbeau , who published in 1589 the earliest treatise on dancing extant, describes it a9-originating in Gormany, but no longer in use in his day. As a movement in a suite, such as those of Bach, however, it was frequently employed and had a definite form. For this purpose it is known always as an Allemande., Still later, it survived as either the Deutseher-Tanz or the Contredanse, examples of which are found in Beethoven and Schubert.
