Highbury Chapel, Bristol, is one of the best known churches in English Congregationalism. It is built on a site where many martyrs were put to death in the days of Queen Mary and tablets on the walls of the church give their names.

In order to cope with the increasing demand upon the accommodation of the Voluntary Hospitals, the Bristol Hospitals Council, representing all the Medical services of the City, decided that urgent extensions were necessary, the estimated cost amounting to £250,000.
