WHEN Surrey visited Yorkshire on the Leeds ground, at the end of May this year, they got completely thrashed. Beaten by ten wickets, in fact—a most humiliating defeat for the pride of the South, the county that gave English cricket its Hayward and its Hobbs, and that still commands a batting strength remarkable even in this free-scoring age. So the match that starts at the Oval today will bo a needle match, with Surrey all out for revenge, and Yorkshire fighting hard to work their way back towards the position at the top of the championship table. which a few years ago seemed to be theirs by right.
