A PERFORMANCE of Masaniello in Brussels
A on August 25, 1S30, has been held partly responsible for the outbreak of the revolution in which the Dutch were driven out of Belgium. Be that as it may, it is generally agreed that this is the finest of all Auber's many (and popular) Operas. Instead of being merely pretty and tuneful, as are so many of his works, Masaniello has dramatic power and spirit. Wagner himself praised the work highly.
The Overture is chiefly made up of tunes from the Opera itself.
LAKME is the daughter of a fanatical Brahmin
Priest. She loves a British officer, and her father hates him.
She sings this song, disguised as a street singer, while her father, dressed as a beggar, and armed with a dagger, is searching for the officer, whom he means to murder, and Lakme seeks to save.
THE second song has often been ascribed to that Arne whom we know best-the Composer of When Daisies Pied and Rule, Britannia. It is really by his son, Michael, whose fame was not so great as that of his father, but who has, nevertheless, left us some charming music.
