Sir Compton Mackenzie recalls Buffalo Bill's visit to England in the Golden Jubilee year of 1887 Colonel William Frederick Cody , Buffalo Bill, is in line with such heroes as Robin Hood and Davy Crockett, with a dash of both D'Artagnan and Don Quixote. Pony Express rider, buffalo hunter, Indian slayer, Chief of Scouts in the U.S. Army, he was perhaps the most colourful figure to come out of the American Wild West. When, as a show-man, he visited Washington he was eagerly awaited by the President; in London he was received by Queen Victoria and the Prince of Wales, later Edward VII; in Paris he became the social lion of the season; but in the words of Annie Oakley ' his heart never left the Great West.
