1—' The Old Lady
Behind Lace Curtains'
The old lady in Newmanton Street never spoke to her neighbours and no one knew anything about her-till one day an urgent telephone call came to the local police station.....
The beginning of this story-and of all the stories in this series-was found by Captain Popkess in the pages of his City Police logbooks. Why the calls came to the Police and what the Police did, will be told by Captain Popkess; but what happened next comes from official records in the central or local government offices and will be told by the man or woman who took the case over from the Police. In this first programme he is a National Assistance Board Officer. There are no actors in these programmes and only the names and minor details of the stories have been changed to avoid identification.
