People's Service from New York
Last October I was in the United States spending most of my time listening to and talking about radio programmes. On my first Sunday, like many another exile, I felt somewhat home-sick and the urge to go to church. The nearest to my hotel was the Fifth Avenue Presbyterian Church, which seemed not inappropriate for the Anglican grandson of a Congregationalist minister. Inside, startled to find the Church filled to its 2,000 capacity, I was passed to near the front and unwittingly stamped myself as a foreigner by getting on to my knees instead of bowing my head as I prayed.
The service was a delight, the singing magnificent, the sermon forthright and challenging, and the welcome outstanding; each stranger was invited to join members of the congregation for a chat and a coffee after the service and to make the church his social headquarters whilst in New York. Over coffee I was introduced to many welcoming Americans and within an hour I had met more potential friends than one would in months in many British churches. It was this blend of friendliness and sincerity that made me return to the church the following weekend and led me to suggest that we should broadcast one of its services. (Denis Morris)
