A programme for children under five
Nursery rhymes, stories, and music
Tomorrow our young listeners will hear again the story by E. Mallett about a little girl who plays at being a hospital nurse. Her patients are her dolls and her Teddy Bear, but she extends her ministrations to the baker and her mother. She dresses up like a ' real hospital nurse '; she has a ' real ' bottle for medicine, and little coloured sweets for pills.
This is a kind of play in which children like to engage, and though a little different from the purely imaginative play we spoke of not long ago in connection with the story of Mousie,' it serves a similar function of helping them to understand themselves and the world around. In both kinds, of course, the co-operation of grown-ups is often demanded, maybe to supply materials, or perhaps merely to enter into the spirit of the thing, as. for example, in the case of the little boy who, having spent two fortnights of this year in hospital, and having heard the previous broadcast of this story, ' spent the, weekend dressed in apron and cap, giving all the family injections, and taking out everybody's appendix.'
