Since the National Birthday Trust Fund was founded in 1928 it has sponsored much pioneer work to save the lives and the health of mothers and babies, to relieve pain in childbirth, and to discover the causes of abnormalities in infants. A nation-wide survey of births carried out under its auspices has revealed an urgent need for funds for intensive research in several new directions.
