The Piazza, in this case, is the main square of Addis Ababa in Ethiopia-so called, surprisingly, in memory of the Italians. But then everything about the square — from its shops and inhabitants, to the constant stream of unusual ' country cousins,' Ethiopian ex-aristocrats and exiled Mississippians — is surprising. From a cafe table (really during a succession of mornings) Peter Duval-Smith surveys the scene.
