Deprived of his seat in Parliament, Sir Roger Scatcherd has returned to Boxall Hill, to indulge in an unrestricted bout of drinking. In consequence, he has been stricken with paralysis-and Dr. Thorne has quickly seen that this time there can be no recovery.
Sir Roger has told the doctor that the clause in his will by which the bulk of his fortune will go to his sister's eldest child, should his son Louis die before reaching the age of twenty-five, remains unaltered; and that he has added a codicil, stating that only Dr. Thorne knows who that child is.
