But Martin has been taken prisoner and is being held in Mr. Ackroyd's London house. Mr. Ackroyd himself has chaperoned Joanna on her journey - and with her are the vital papers. It is only when Joanna finds herself locked in Mr. Ackroyd's drawing-room that she realises he is an agent of France and the Emperor Napoleon.
