3-The Limits of Improvement
Can the human species still evolve? Is there anything we can do about it?
Both natural selection and selective breeding are made possible because there are differences between the individual members of a species, and many of these differences can be inherited. In theory it would appear to be a relatively simple matter to produce an almost uniformly excellent breed. But in practice, as stockbreeders know, there are obstinate biological facts which make the undertaking extremely difficult, and seldom, if ever, successful. The reason lies in the very nature of the inborn differences.
This evening's broadcast gives an analysis of the different kinds of inborn diversity in animal and human populations and shows how they contribute to biological fitness.
