Jeffrey Wilson and Madge Wilson 's weekend visit to Fred and Beckie's pretentious menagerie in Connecticut is over. And back again in New York, Jeffrey is still obsessed by the feeling that disaster is imminent-still appalled by the contrast between the everyday life of the city and the war situation (October, 1940) over in Europe. His friend, Minot Roberts , with his clear-cut code, thinks that America should have been in the fight from the beginning. But Minot has no personal attachments to worry him. For Jeffrey, whose son Jim is of military age, the issue is not so simple.
The play which Jesse Fineman has been rehearsing (starring Marianna Miller ) is due to open in Boston for a short trial run; and Jeffrey, as Jesse's play-doctor, has promised to accompany him there for the opening week of it.

2-The Lessons of the War
In this lecture Sir Edward Appleton recalls some of the lessons that can usefully be drawn from the events of the last war, when we surprised both our enemies and ourselves by our successes in defence technology. The majority of our scientists were then faced with unfamiliar tasks; and many found as much satisfaction in applying scientific principles as they had previously found in discovering them. Science was also found to be successful in unexpected places.
As the war developed it became clear that the assistance the scientist could render to his operational colleagues was not limited to the design of new weapons and instruments. Invading the field of strategy and tactics he was often also able to suggest how both could be used in the most effective manner.
