Cesar Franck 's ' Prelude, Chorale, and Fugue,' his most important piano work, was first performed at a concert of the Societe Nationale in Paris in 1885. His original intention was to write a prelude and fugue in the style of Bach, but as the work progressed he conceived the idea of linking the two movements together with a Chorale which would dominate the whole work.
