How much do most of us know about Alfred the Great-except that rather uncertain story of the burnt cakes? Yet Alfred is at once one of the most heroic and one of the most attractive figures among our bygone kings. His adventures, whether as a small boy in Rome or a guerilla leader in the Somerset Fens, make a good opening for this new series of plays, a sequel to the author's ' Sovereign Ladies,' broadcast in Coronation Year, 1953.

The Association, with 2,250 affiliated clubs in all parts of the United Kingdom, has a membership of 134,000 boys and girls between the ages of fourteen and twenty-five. They are encouraged to create a community of their own and to enjoy a wide variety of educational and recreational activities. Many of the clubs are linked with religious organisations; all aim at developing the spiritual, intellectual, and physical capacities of their members.
The training of members to become voluntary leaders and helpers is a vital part of the work of the Association, for which funds are urgently needed.

Nigel Olifaunt , Lord Glenvarloch , found himself in the midst of intrigue and subterfuge when he arrived at the Court of King James in 1620 to reclaim a large sum of money owed to him by the King. On his recovery of the money depended the fate of the heavily mortgaged Glenvarloch estates in Scotland. Nigel soon discovered that some powerful person-probably the hostile Duke of Bucking-ham-was determined to get the estates.
The young Scot, befriended by George Heriot , the King's goldsmith, and the charming young Margaret Ramsay , was introduced to Court circles where he met Lord Dalgarno. Even when Nigel discovered that Dalgarno was one of Buckingham's circle, he did not see any danger in their acquaintanceship till a letter signed ' Ignoto ' reached him, warning him that Dalgarno was betraying his trust.
