When the glider pilot sets off optimistically from his starting point he has very little idea of where he is likely to be two or three hours lateir. He often lands unexpectedly in places where he is dependent on the hospitality of strangers. Securing a cup of tea and the use of the telephone so that he can arrange for a retrieving crew to fetch him and his glider often becomes a fine art.
