As in old Mystery-Plays a Nuncius (or Herald) greets the audience and then shows
THE FIVE MANSIONS
1. THE COURT OF LILIES Two Christian brothers awaiting torture by fire are fortified by the Archer-Captain Sebastian, who calling on God lets fly an arrow that does not fall: inspired, he dances barefoot on the coals, while beyond the lilies of the court seven Seraphim arise.
2. THE ROOM OF SORCERY With Sebastian, come to destroy this last pagan stronghold, ruled unseen by the Virgin Erigone, there is a woman with the shroud of the dead Christ: at sight of this there is heard the voice of the Mother of God.
3. THE COUNCIL OF FALSE GODS Scorning the vengeful priests and the cajoltng Emperor, Sebastian dances the drama of the Son of Man: but when he crushes a golden image of Victory given him in adoration by the Emperor, he is outstretched, a flower-decked pagan sacrifice.
