Today scientists and radio engineers are celebrating the centenary of the birth of Oliver Heaviside whose researches in the ionosphere made the mysterious Heaviside Layer almost as familiar as the Mi!ky Way.
In this programme Sir Edward Appleton , after whom a layer of the ionosphere was also named, talks about Heaviside's pioneer work and its importance to radio transmission today.
