Part 1
The Sixth Symphony of Malipiero, one of the leading Italian composers of today, was written in Venice in 1947 and first performed at Zurich last February under the direction of Paul Sacher , to whom it is dedicated. It was played by the Boyd Neel Orchestra at the Bath Festival in May. Its four movements exploit the possibilities of a string orchestra and a string quartet with the utmost skill and ingenuity, and the music has undeniable emotional power.
John Ireland's Concertino Pastorale is likewise a notable essay in string-writing and an attractive example of the composer's very individual style. It was written for Boyd Neel and his Orchestra to play at a Serenade in the cloisters of Canterbury Cathedral in June 1939. Although the opening of the Eclogue may reflect a mood of uneasiness, the main part of the movement is straightforward and melodious. A deeply expressive Threnody follows, and the work ends with a brilliant Toccata.
