The overture to Wagner's opera. The Mastersingers, uses many of the main themes heard in the opera, beginning with the heroic theme of the Mastersingers followed by their Guild March, then the theme of ' artistic brotherhood ' and finally part of the tune of Walther's Prize Song. It is an overture of panoply and joy, with banners bearing the image of the great King David, whose own song was of joy.
Beethoven's second pianoforte concerto,
Opus 19, is a slighter work than the three which follow and Beethoven himself considered it the least effective. It contains much to enchant the ear. It is in the usual three-movement form, the second, an adagio, having the greatest depth.
Tchaikovsky inscribed bis fourth symphony ' to my best friend '- Nadejda Van Meek, the woman of his life whom Tchaikovsky never met, and writing to each other they referred to it with much passion as our symphony. The work has a definite programme. ' This is Fate ' Tchaikovsky wrote of the first movement. ' that inevitable force which checks our aspirations towards happiness 'ere they reach their goal.' The second movement reflects on this, while the third seeks solace in the company of a ' tipsy peasant and a street song.' In the last movement, though the fate theme is inexorable happiness is found in the spectacle of other people ' and the forgetting of self and self-pity.

On June 28 the Berlin Airlift became one year old: for a year it had been going on every day, and for twenty-four hours of every day. This programme tells the story of that year: it deals with the blockade, its effects, and* its ultimate lifting. It tries to show how this unprecedented situation involved the lives of ordinary people, from the airlift pilot to the Berlin housewife
