11.20 HOW THINGS BEGAN. 'The End of Prehistoric Britain.'
Script by Jacquetta Hawkes.
One of the greatest of the British kings of the pre-Roman Iron Age was Cunobelin, better known as Cymbeline from Shakespeare's incorrect version of his name. His capital, Camulodunum (just outside modern Colchester), has recently been excavated, and the results of this 'dig' will be used to reconstruct the life of a settlement which, while still belonging to the prehistoric past, was being strongly influenced by civilisation. The Emperor Claudius came to Cumulodunum in person after his defeat of Cunobelin's son Caradoc (Caractacus) in A.D. 43. Twenty-eight years later Queen Boudicca (Boadicca) there led her rebel forces against the Roman colonists

STORIES FROM WORLD HISTORY. In This Sign': a story told by an imaginary Roman soldier in the army of Constantine. Script by Silvia Goodall
He describes his adventures the night before the army went into battle when the emperor had a vision of a fiery cross in the sky, surrounded by the words ' In this sign, conquer.' The soldier tells of the effect this vision had upon the emperor and upon his soldiers, and how when the battle was won and Constantine had entered Rome he declared himself a Christian, released all who had been imprisoned or persecuted because of their faith in Christ, and eventually made Christianity the official religion of the Roman Empire
