The play opens with a prologue in a dressing-room in Sir John Carlton 's house in Porchester Terrace in 1922, flashes back to Mary's bedroom in her parents' house at Blackheath in 1865, then to the living room of a wooden shack in Wyoming in 1869, forward again to the drawing-room of the Porchester Terrace house in 1888, and finishes at the same time and place p where it began.
