(All arrangements by Mischa Michaeloff ) Michaeloff received his first lessons from his father, who was one of the principal military band conductors in Russia. When he came to this country Michaeloff brought with him a knowledge of Bcssarabian music such as was at the time possessed by few others in the country. The catchy tunes and virile arrangements rendered by his first orchestra immediately caught on, and he has been playing a great deal of this type of music ever since.

R. H. Schlauffer , the American biographer and critic of Brahms, points out that if Brahms's Symphony No. 3 in F, must be given a label, the most apt would be ' Portrait '. ' This work ', he says, ' might be taken as a portrait in tones of a healthy, strong, turbulent, tender, indomitable, kindly, aggressive, ironic, tempestuous, self-distrustful, incisive, concentrated, modest, fiery, rude, genial man -a person, in fact, just like the one who created it.' Brahms was all these things ; like most of us, he was a mass of contradictions. In short, he expressed in this symphony his own personality and nothing more.
