Our grandfathers counted Donizetti as one of the great masters of melody. The Daughter of the Regiment, produced in Paris in 1840, soon made its way to opera houses abroad. Its blend of simple melody, light-hearted merriment, and sentiment, has always attracted singers as well as audiences, and such great artists as Jenny Lind. Sontag, Patti, and Albani enjoyed playing the title role.
Donizetti was born in 1797 and died in 1848. He wrote over sixty operas, most of them at an incredible speed. One he completed in nine days, and the last act of La Favorila he finished in a matter of a few hours.
