Sir William Sterndale Bennett , pianist and composer and friend of Mendelssohn, was in 1866 appointed Principal of the Royal Academy of Music and later became professor of music at Cambridge.
One of his most popular works was the cantata The May Queen, which sets forth the joyous spirit of May Day. "It was composed for the Leeds Festival of 1858, of which Sterndale Bennett was the conductor.
