For centuries the Turkomans were dreaded by their neighbours as the most ruthless of all Central Asian tribes. They filled the role of professional slave raiders for the markets of Khiva and Bokhara. Tom Stobart and Ralph Izzard travel through the Elburz Mountains on to the steppes of north-east Persia to meet a people whose menfolk still spend the greater part of their lives in the saddle.
