Written by Anthea Browne-Wilkinson.

On August 7, 1857, alone and unnoticed, avoiding the enthusiastic receptions planned for her, Florence Nightingale returned to her home after two years in the Crimea: and there, for many of us, her career ends. But fifty-four years of life remained to her end were fully occupied in achieving what, for her, was of far greater importance. Tonight's programme deals with this period of her life and shows why, today, her influence is still felt in hospitals all over the world.
