by Angus Wilson
[Starring] Ralph Michael, Mary Hinton, George Benson

The action takes place in the Warden's house and garden of a University College.
The time is the present.

(George Benson is appearing in 'Nekrassov' at the Royal Court Theatre; Viola Lyel in 'The Bride and the Bachelor' at the Duchess Theatre, London)

The Padleys are a distinguished family whose name has long been associated with humane and liberal causes, and this play by the well-known novelist and short-story writer, Angus Wilson, shows the Padley character in three generations. There are the old Padleys - James, an eminent university scholar, and his wife, Rose; their daughter, Cora Fellowes; and the young Padleys - Cora's barrister son, Simon; and Ann Padley, the daughter of Cora's dead brother, Robert, who was a notable education reformer. It is with the young people that the play is especially concerned, for the Padleys have always been happier with theory than fact, and the difference between human beings as they should be and as they are is brought home by the impact of three very different people - a young English scholar, a German refugee, and a lady formerly associated with Ann's father.
