Tonight's play by the distinguished Irish dramatist, Paul Vincent Carroll, centres upon the ever-fascinating, enigmatic personality of Jonathan Swift (1667-1745). Here is a vivid portrayal of the two sides of Swift's character - of the ambitious, Irish-born clergyman who hated the 'scoundrel island' of Ireland (as he put it), the brilliant satirist and pamphleteer who supported the Tory cause in an attempt to fight the Whigs and the great Duke of Marlborough. Here, too, is the woman-loathing lover, adored by Esther Vanhomrigh and Esther Johnson, who have passed into posterity as 'Vanessa' and 'Stella'. Mr. Vincent Carroll brings the turbulent early eighteenth-century world of London and Dublin to life through the political and private dilemmas of a proud, unhappy genius.
