Meanwhile, Franz, who has climbed a ladder into a room, is seized by Coppelius, who decides to ply him with wine, and with the help of a book of magic to transfer his spirit into Coppelia. In fact, it is not Coppelia at all, but Swanilda, who has taken her place. To the great joy of the toy-maker, she comes to life, but when he pretends that Franz is a doll too, she gets very angry and becomes hopelessly out of control. Franz recovers consciousness, recognises Swanilda, and Coppelius realises that he has been fooled.
