Nearly 40 years since the release of Tammy Wynette's signature hit Stand by Your Man, Alabama-born singer Candi Staton explores the changes in attitudes towards violent male-female relations since Wynette's tale of unqualifed worship.
Having suffered at the hands of two abusive partners, Staton - best known for her 1976 hit Young Hearts Run Free - presents a music-based documentary that features a personal account of her own troubles. With contributions from Sheryl Gascoigne (estranged wife of footballer Paul Gascoigne), singers David Soul and Tina Turner, and Boy George and his mother, Dinah O'Dowd. Paul Gambaccini offers music-related input with tracks by Tracy Chapman, the Dixie Chicks, Alice Cooper, Tina Turner, Chris Rea and Jamelia.
