1/2. Stuart Maconie tells the story of Manchester-raised singer and lyricist Steven Patrick Morrissey who, with guitarist/songwriter Johnny Marr, led the incomparably influential 80s pop-rock band the Smiths, purveyors of combined cheek, bitterness and melodramatic yearning. In 1987 Morrissey forged a solo career that, while less vital, has sustained and, by way of Latin America, expanded on an intense cult following. In a recent poll conducted by BBC2's The Culture Show, Morrissey trailed only David Attenborough as Britain's greatest living icon. Contributors include Smiths producer Stephen Street, Smiths bass guitarist Andy Rourke, singers Preston (of the Ordinary Boys) and Badly Drawn Boy, Suggs, producer Tony Visconti and comedian/drummer Andrew Paresi, plus friends and fans.
