Trevor Nelson celebrates the 50th anniversary of Memphis-based soul studio Stax Records.
Formerly Satellite Records, the label took its name from the first two letters of the surnames of its owners Jim Stewart and Estelle Axon , whose renowned roster of 60s artists included Rufus and Carla Thomas , Mar-Keys, Booker T and the MGs, Sam and Dave and, on their subsidiary Volt label, Otis Redding. Recalling the label's glory days are Stax house composers Isaac Hayes and David Porter , guitarist/songwriter Steve Cropper and trumpeter Wayne Jackson. Producer Carmel Lonergan
