Mark Radcliffe profiles the rather eccentric and cynically spirited pop-rock duo Sparks.
Brothers Ron and Russell Mael formed in Los Angeles in 1971, but then in 1974 relocated to England, where they resuscitated the charts with their bombastic and cinematic number two pop hit This Town Ain't Big Enough for the Both of Us. Other hits include Amateur Hour, Beat the Clock and, with Jane Widelin, the 1983 45 Cool Places (their only single to crack the US top 50). The programme features their first ever demo and other previously unreleased material. Plus input from producers Giorgio Moroder and Tony Visconti, singers Alex Kapranos (of Franz Ferdinand) and Justin Hawkins, and Ron Mael.
Producers Siobhan Synnot and Dougie Campbell
