New series 1/3.
Alan Titchmarsh celebrates the Victorian comic-opera masters WS Gilbert and Arthur Sullivan , best known for HMS
Pinafore (1878) and The Mikado (1885). The series identifies the duo as precursors to Monty Python and the satirical modern musical, and includes a rare recording of their lost, first collaboration, Thespis (1871). Contributors include film directors Mike Leigh (Topsy-Turvy) and Michael Winner (The Cool Mikado), lyricist Tim Rice , former Chancellor
Kenneth Clarke , soprano Valerie Masterson , stage producer Peter Molloy , Broadway critic Matt Wolf and satirical musician/songwriter Neil Innes. Plus archive input from
London Mayor Ken Livingstone and former cabinet minister Lord Baker.
