1/2. Steve Harley celebrates the 50th anniversary of the first UK chart appearance of a British rock 'n' roll single.
Tommy Steele 's 1956 number-13 debut hit. Rock with the Caveman, signalled a response to the American sound established a few months earlier by Elvis Presley 's Heartbreak Hotel (and two years before that of Bill Haley and His Comets). Marty Wilde entered the fold in 1958, followed by Cliff Richard with the seminal Move It!
This two-parter recalls the distinctively British, pre-Beatles rock 'n' roll sound, and examines the genre's debt to both radio and TV. Contributors include
John Barry , Joe Brown , Chas McDevitt. Cliff Richard , Hank Marvin and Bruce Welch (of the Shadows),
Tommy Steele , Bert Weedon and Marty Wilde. Plus archive input from Adam Faith , Billy Fury , Lonnie Donegan and Larry Parnes , who managed most of the early rockers. Producer Kevin Howlett
