2/4. Richard Carpenter explores the hugely prolific (and profitable) career of trumpeter, composer and producer Herb Alpert , who co-founded A&M Records and had seismic success both as frontman for the Tijuana Brass and as a solo singer (This Guy's in Love with You). The instrumental septet initially hit big in 1962 with The Lonely Bull (El Sorro Torro).
This programme moves on to the mid-60s, when the band's Latin-flavoured, breezy and decorative sound resulted in phenomenal album sales. Radio hits during this period include the Grammy-winning A Taste of Honey, Tijuana Taxi, Spanish Flea and Casino Royale. Contributors include Herb Alpert, A&M partner Jerry Moss, songwriter Burt Bacharach, Sergio Mendes and, from the Tijuana Brass, drummer Bob Findlay, guitarist John Pisano and bassist Pat Senatore.
Featuring a live session from girl-group-inspired pop act the Pipettes.
