1/2. Bob Geldof shares his observations from a recent inspiring visit to Africa.
Talking to journalist Paul Vallely - who co-authored Geldof's autobiography - the poverty-relief guru discusses the significant role of faith among Africans, who are deeply religious across strong traditional, Christian or Muslim beliefs. This first part argues - contrary to most Western thinking - that Africa is at once modern and traditional, and looks at the roles of voodoo and traditional healing and the belief in an invisible world. With music by Ladysmith Black Mambazo, Youssou N'Dour and Fela Kuti.
2/6. Russell Davies continues a tribute to the supremely popular but temperamentally challenging trombonist and band leader Tommy Dorsey, who died in 1956, aged 51, following a swing-era career boasting over 180 charted singles, including 17 US number ones. Defining recordings include Song of India, Marie, Boogie Woogie, On the Sunny Side of the Street, Opus One and, with Frank Sinatra and the Pied Pipers, I'll Never Smile Again and There Are Such Things.
