2/8. As the pop single struggles to secure its niche in the digital era, Radio 2 singles out eight 45rpm records - all released between
1966 and 1977 - for their lasting significance. Each week a known music figure presents an in-depth exploration of a classic seven-inch. Tonight jazz artist Jamie Cullum enthuses over Jimi Hendrix 's big heavy hit All along the Watchtower. Written by Bob Dylan , the 1968 single gave the acid-rock guitarist/ singer a fourth trip to the UK top ten, while in America it proved to be his only Top 40 appearance. With input from Mitch Mitchell , drummer with the Jimi Hendrix Experience.
