Mark Radcliffe presents the first of two programmes exploring the personal life of Karen Carpenter , who died in 1983, aged 32, and whose cheery, controlled and immaculately polished singing voice (as one half of 70s pop duo the Carpenters) masked a deeply troubled spirit. With input from Phil Ramone , Herb Alpert , Nicky Chinn , press agent Brian Southall , personal friends and, in archive interviews, Karen and Richard Carpenter. This 2004 documentary was recently cited as a favourite among Radio 2 listeners.

4/4. Russell Davies concludes a tribute to saxophonist
Charlie Parker , who died in 1955. aged 34, leaving an extraordinary legacy. Parker - aka "Bird" - nurtured his unique style first in Kansas City and then in New York City, where he developed the bop sound. He suffered a nervous breakdown in Los Angeles following addictions to both heroin and alcohol.
