In this new co-production of Debussy's Pelleas et Melisande, Simon Rattle brings his interpretation of the composer's score to the Royal Opera House, in a production first seen at the 2006 Salzburg Festival. The cast is led by Simon Keenlyside , together with Gerald Finley and Angelika Kirchschlager, who made her debut in the role in Salzburg last year. The mysterious Melisande is discovered wandering in a forest by the prince Golaud, who marries her and takes her back with him to his grandfather's forbidding castle. Melisande meets Golaud's half-brother Pelleas, and a tragedy unfolds as they are drawn irresistibly toward each other.
