When Elgar's Symphony No 1 was premiered in 1908, the audience demanded the presence of the composer on the platform between movements and people stood on their chairs to catch a glimpse of him. Biographers Jerrold Northrop Moore and Michael Kennedy , along with Birmingham's Elgar Professor of Music,
Stephen Banfield , and lecturer Robert Meikle , comment on the significance and success of the piece.

Many inmates of Belsen knew that the war was ending and waited, sick and weak, for British troops to reach the camp, with its piles of rotting corpses, and liberate it.
